This illustration was born from a chance encounter that helped me remember what I had temporarily forgotten: that healing requires not only embracing our suffering, but also watering the seeds of joy, gratitude, love, and compassion. After a period of becoming consumed by disappointment and resistance, I was reminded of Thich Nhat Hanh’s teaching of Right Diligence and the practice of selective gardening—choosing which seeds within us we nourish. As I consciously turned my attention back toward gratitude, a nearly full moon illuminated my path through the darkness, becoming a symbol of renewed hope and the awakening of dormant joy. The following day, on a young woman’s birthday, I met someone whose openness, generosity, and aspiration to heal others reflected a younger version of myself. As we talked beneath a tiny umbrella in the rain, she described a vision of a web of light connecting human beings—an image that immediately evoked Indra’s Net, the infinite web of interbeing in which every jewel reflects and illuminates every other. In my illustration, we hold this luminous web between us. She appears as a younger self, almost like a daughter or a reflection of who I once was, while the Black Buddha and Thầy, together with the Poplar Cathedral, Bell Tower, and spring flowers, bear witness to our encounter. Through this web of light, she helped rekindle my innocence, gratitude, and aspiration to serve. What began as her birthday became, in a sense, mine as well—a moment of being born again into my own light.
